🍑 Apricots vs. Bananas

Potassium fruits: Who wins?

You may remember apricots as the squishy fellows in your trail mix from third grade …

And if you were like me, you may or may have not discarded them, every single time …

Now, my previous ignorance of apricots makes me shudder.

Apricots are a secret weapon for athletes and active people of all ages – far from a role player.

That’s because they are absolutely loaded with potassium (P), an electrolyte that is crucial for muscle function and recovery.

For anyone upping their physical activity this summer, listen up: potassium is the underdog electrolyte we never talk about enough.

When you hear potassium, you likely think of bananas.

While the famous yellow fruit does contain some amounts of 🅿, they pale in comparison to these dried wonders.

5 pieces of dried apricots = ~500 mg potassium, much more than a banana.

This is our new motto. I mean, seriously – bananas – who needs them! I’d like to see the collapse of the banana empire in my lifetime. Who crowned them King of potassium? The United Fruit Company probably did, that’s who. APRICOT UPRISING ‼️

Because of all the sports I play, bad recovery is not an option.

That’s why I’ve been quietly leaning on apricots as a superfood for my workouts.

The potassium makes me faster, more loose and limber, and keeps me at the top of my athletic game.

Let’s get into why that is.

1. Muscle Contraction & Preventing Cramps 💪🏽

Potassium is key for smooth, efficient muscle contractions

Low potassium = cramps, fatigue, and that shaky, depleted feeling you get during or after intense effort.

2. Nerve Function & Recovery ❤️‍🩹

  • I literally feel less nervous or wired when my potassium is straight.

  • That’s because potassium supports nerve signaling, helping your brain and body stay coordinated under stress.

  • It also helps regulate fluid balance and blood pressure, which affects how well you recover.

3. Electrolyte Balance ⚡️

• When you sweat, you lose electrolytes, especially sodium, but also potassium.

• Without replenishing potassium, you risk dehydration, dizziness, and poor performance — even if you’re drinking enough water.

🍑Apricots are great for:

Post-workout snacking

• Long runs, hikes or cycling

• Hot weather electrolyte support (y’all felt this last week)

Apricots have been revolutionary for me.

I’ve been throwing back a handful (or five…) after hours of basketball, fight training, or long bike rides, and I swear I bounce back so much faster.

Plus, they’re delicious. Like nature’s sour patch kids, without the crash.

Some other dried fruits like dates, figs and prunes also have solid potassium levels, but they don’t stack up close to apricots.

Pair them with water and a pinch of salt, and you’ve got a high-performance electrolyte snack.

If you’re moving more this summer, sweating more, or just want to recover smoother — keep a bag around.

Your muscles (and sweet tooth) will thank you.
